π Itβs Not a Coin Pocket β Itβs a Watch Pocket
Originally, that small pocket was designed to hold a pocket watch.
So Leviβs designed jeans with a fifth pocket β specifically to protect pocket watches from damage while working in harsh conditions.
In the 1890 Leviβs catalog, it was even referred to as a “watch pocket.“
π°οΈ Why Is It Still There?
- Tradition β Itβs a nod to denimβs heritage.
- Style β The pocket adds a classic, rugged detail to the jeans’ look.
- Functionality (sort of) β While it may not hold a watch anymore, people use it for coins, guitar picks, rings, lighters, USB drives, or tiny treasures.
π€ Fun Fact: Itβs Actually the Fifth Pocket
You may think jeans only have four pockets, but that tiny one is officially considered the fifth. Classic jeans have:
- Two back pockets
- Two front pockets
- One small βwatchβ pocket inside the right front pocket
Thatβs five.
