Originally, that small pocket was designed to hold a pocket watch.

When Levi Strauss & Co. released their first pair of blue jeans in the late 1800s, wristwatches weren’t a thing yet. Men typically carried their pocket watches on chains and kept them in their waistcoats. But cowboys, miners, and railway workers didn’t wear fancy vests while working the rough outdoors.

So Levi’s designed jeans with a fifth pocket — specifically to protect pocket watches from damage while working in harsh conditions.

In the 1890 Levi’s catalog, it was even referred to as a “watch pocket.“

🕰️ Why Is It Still There?

Pocket watches are long gone for most of us, but the tiny pocket has remained a staple of jeans design for over a century. Why?

1. Tradition – It’s a nod to denim’s heritage.
2. Style – The pocket adds a classic, rugged detail to the jeans’ look.
3. Functionality (sort of) – While it may not hold a watch anymore, people use it for coins, guitar picks, rings, lighters, USB drives, or tiny treasures.

🤔 Fun Fact: It’s Actually the Fifth Pocket

You may think jeans only have four pockets, but that tiny one is officially considered the fifth. Classic jeans have:

• Two back pockets
• Two front pockets
• One small “watch” pocket inside the right front pocket

That’s five.
